When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease --of the joy that kills.
It is an ironic statement. Nobody noticed the transformation from Mrs. Mallard and assumed that she was overjoyed with the thought of seeing her husband alive.
This was a time when women were part of men’s property. Marriage was not always about love but security.
Absorbing the news of her husband’s death, Mrs. Mallard felt free and overjoyed by the thought that she would be able to live for herself, with no one forcing her to do anything. Her body and soul would be finally totally free, free from her husband, free from the trap of her marriage. She was looking forward to a long brand new life. The joy was overwhelming. However, when she saw that her husband was still alive, she was so shock that her heart could not handle it. It was like announcing a death sentence to her that her new-found life would no longer exist and she would have to go back to live her confined life with her husband.
The story depicts women's roles in marriage and feminine identity, the binding of the society, and emotions of tasting freedom and losing it at the same time.Source(s): Myself. Went abroad at age 11.
