You can try to set it yourself and split it yourself, but it'll hurt a lot, and there's the risk of nerve and vascular damage. If the nerves get wrecked, you could lose feeling, or fine control, and maybe get a constant tingling sensation from that finger. If the blood vessels get wrecked, in the short term, it might get bruised and be even more painful. In the long term, if the finger doesn't get enough blood, it could die and go gangrenous (then you'd have to go to the ER to have it chopped off or you could die).
Even if everything goes ok with a do-it-yourself setting, unless you align the bones properly and splint it securely, the finger will heal crooked. Aside from looking really freaky, mobility will be restricted if it doesn't heal right.
As for bringing down bruises and swelling:
2. NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti-Inflamatory Drugs). That'd be Apsirin, Tylenol, Ibuprophen. These will bring down swelling and reduce bruising. It kind of helps that they're also pain relievers.
My advice: Take a few aspirins to take the edge off, and go to the ER and have it fixed properly. No point in doing it half-assed.
