An internship program is usually a program in which current students work on a temporary basis for a company for short periods (usually 3 months) like during summer when most schools are closed. These short periods help students to gain some professional experience as well as some money while studying. For the companies, interns can perform some valuable tasks. Also, they can evaluate the interns based on the performance during the internship period and recruit the best ones as full time employees after they are done with their studies. Usually during internship, students work full time (i.e 40 hours a week).

One variant of internship is called as co-op, when students work part-time (i.e 20 hours or less a week) and take courses simultaneously.
