Google is only an indexing service, nothing more. A picture that gets index by google doesn't loose its rights.

Its up to the original owner/website that the image came from.

Unless you see a clear disclaimer saying otherwise, its probably safe to assume that the image is copyrighted.

Your best bet is to contact the original website for permission.

    Here's what I do.

I get free pictures from morguefile.com.

I have a set of stock photos I have purchased.

I shoot some pics myself when I want something in particular.

I doctor photos up with Paintshop Pro.

    I buy model photos.

All of these I have the rights to use. You can also buy stock photos off sites that specialize in providing them to designers, etc.

Contact the owner of the site the picture was on (not google) and find out.

the best way to do it is to look at the site's copyright info or site info. That should tell you. They may be fine with you using it, or you may need to provide their site info and cite them if you do. If you are unclear, they usually provide an email address to contact and ask them.

If you credit the photographer, and they have not said you can't use them, you can use any of them.
