Is manifest destiny justified?? Why?

I am looking for both pros and cons of this historical event.

10 pts to the most reasonable answer :)

Update:

well sure times may have changed as well as standards, but KILLING people who resisted to leave their OWN land for such a dumb excuse is plain wrong.!

If you look at it in the context of it's time and not judge it by the standards people have today I would say it was justified. You have to consider the fact that what is now the U.S. was at first basically carved up by he European countries with a strip in the east being the United States. France, Spain and Britain all had imperialist desires as well so the U.S. never really felt secure while so much of the contiguous territory was controlled by a foreign power. The basic idea behind imperialism is to secure your borders by expanding them and that's what the Manifest Destiny was really all about, it's naive to think that things could have remained as they were and everyone would have gotten along peacefully. Many people have the luxury of residing on the very land that was obtained through Manifest Destiny and still complain about it but I guarantee you that none of them would be interested in giving their land back.

You are quite right. Manifest Destiny was the idea that the US had the right to all the territory to the Pacific, justified by nothing. There was a jolt of it in the conflict with Great Britain over the Oregon Territory in 1845, but it was the sole reason for the Mexican War of 1846-48. Opposed by abolitionists (or anti-slave-state dominationists), this war ultimately doubled the country's size. Like it or not, the result of this kind of nonreasoning expansionism is what we have today.

It's all perspective. Another responder said if you looked at it in its time rather than the current day, it has the context of an accepted practice. True, but we are still looking at it from a Euro-centric point of view. Today, we in the US, which is European in its roots, still look at the practice with our Europe glasses on. Now, we can call it wrong. Sure we can. We already took the land. What about countries in other parts of the world now that want their lands back or want to expand and conquer new lands. Why is it wrong for them? Is it because times have changed, and the world does not accept this anymore? Or is it because OUR views have changed, and we do not accept this anymore?

It may not be justified per se, but it is in human nature to expand and to conquore (sorry if thats spelled wrong). For example, first you start out in an appartment, then it gets too small for you so you buy a house. may not sound the same, but it has some of the basic princibles.
