depends on what phone company or what department...

I am going to assume you mean technician jobs.....

there are basicllay 3 types of technicians for the RBOC... installation and repair (the guys who come to your home), cable splicers, and central office technicians... (there are many other job titles within the telephone company, these are just a few of the ones who actually do the work on the line...

installation and repair technicians, as there job title states install and repair telephone lines. They work from the customers premisis upto the telephone terminals... and even inside wiring.

splicers work in the manholes and poles between the terminal(s) and central office, and on occasion even inside the central office. When there are no available spare pairs in a terminal, or a new terminal is placed, they need to spice together the underground cable to the telephone terminals. They normally do not visit the customers location, but on occasion are loaned out to the installation and repair department...

central office technicians work inside the central office, they work with outside technicians (splicers and installation and repair) to test the cable and pairs between the terminal and central office (some of these tests can also be done with automated tests with out the need for a central office tech). they also run the wiring inside the central office from the switching equiptment to the cable and pair that is being fed to the terminal that is feeding the customers location. they also run the wiring inside the central office for other features such as DSL...

a phone technician for a CLEC or reseller normally is just an inside wiring tech, they repair and install wiring from the network interface to the inside wiring, and refer outside troubles to the RBOC. a tech for a CLEC may or may not also service business customers phone systems (RBOC techs will never service a phone system)

a telephone system technician installs business telephone systems, and many of them also install data networking. some will also do residential inside wiring, but many will not. they may also install intercom systems, door access controls, security systems.. etc..
