a GMAT article question
The primary purpose of the 2nd paragraph is to show that Augustan Rome and 5th century Athens are examples of cultural, economic, and military expansion against which all subsequent cases must be measured.
the sentences above are from a GMAT article, I dont understand the meaning following from the word "against" to the end.
could anyone translate it for me? thanks a lot.

In this example, "against (which)" is a comparison preposition that whatever follows will be compared to what's in the front.
So, "all subsequent cases" means later cases/locals of cultural, economic, and military expansions will be measured against that of Augustan Rome and 5th century Athens.
(Since you used all English, we'll start with explaining it in English. If you still don't get it, then we'll try it in Chinese.)
