Significant Figures are just a way of explaining how accurate your devices can be. And you can only be as accurate as your least accurate number.
A number like 1234 has four significant figures since it has four digits, as does a number such as 0.1234
.545 = Three significant figures
23 = Two significant figures
147.437 = Six significant figures
.99999 = Five significant figures
Significant figures ignore leading and trailing zeroes since they can be simplified using scientific notation.
1200 = 1.2 x 10^3 = Two significant figures
0.000123 = 1.23 x 10^-4 = Three significant figures

give me some numbers and I will try to show you. It is easier to show with examples, explaining along the way.
