How long does a TB test take?

I am required to take a TB test in order to apply for a job. Does it take long to take the test? I really don't want to have to wait a really long time at the clinic. Would it be ok to return to my other job?

The sort of TB tests I know, are a bit longer than that. In the UK, we use the 'Heaf' test, I believe in America they use the 'Mantoux' test. Both work in the same way, anyway, and they are both skin tests.

You have to have a tiny injection into your lower arm of a very dilute extract, of killed TB germs. Then you go back about a week later and have it 'read.' What is being looked for, is whether the body has reacted at all to the presence of the dead TB germ in your skin... this phot shows the injection for a Mantoux test... and in this picture someone is shown measuring the exact size of the skin reaction...

The test result can be interpreted in various ways. If there is no skin reaction at all, it shows, not only that you do not have tuberculosis, but that your body has never been in contact with a TB germ. If there is a slight reaction, it usually means, not only that you don't have tuberculosis, but that your body *has* been in contact with a tuberculosis germ at some time in your life, (and you threw the mild infection off without any help).

A big reaction like this one, is usually taken to mean that you have a TB infection somewhere in your body. Then you would have to have further tests to find out whereabouts the infection is, and then treatment to cure it.

I hope this is of some help.

You need to get a TB test every year. If you work or live around old or sick people then you should never miss a year.

TB tests are VERY short. I had to take one to volunteer at a hostpital. You will be in and out in a flash. After you get the test it is ok to go bak to your job but you will hafta go back to the clinic to get the results.

    Hope i helped ya :)
