I AM A ROCK, Paul Simon.?
what is the theme of this song, is it a good song or poem why or why not.
A winter's day
In a deep and dark December;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
I've built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
Don't talk of love,
Well I've heard the word before;
It's sleeping in my memory.
I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

Paul Simon earned himself the nickname "Mr. Alienation" over this song. He later said that he regretted writing it because of that. This song speaks of an individual being so hurt by the world that he has decided to shut himself away from it. He sits alone in his apartment looking out at the world. The winter snow mirrors the coldness in his his heart. He's decided that he can't take the pain of love and friendship any more and has become like rock. Rocks feel no pain and are not easily moved. The island is a metaphor for his isolation. YES, This is excellent as both a song and as a poem. Paul Simon is genius.

The theme is loneliness and desire to be alone, it's a good song/poem because it expresses his feelings sufficently yet artistically. Paul Simon is brilliant.

The main point of this song is, avoid emotional attatchments, they only lead to sadness. The lyrics "friendship causes pain" and "If I never loved I never would have cried" express that. The song is about getting hurt once and shutting out everyone else to avoid getting hurt again.
