why does coiled copper wire extinguish a candle when it is put in the flame?

for part of a chemistry experiment, we had to put coiled copper wire into the flame. when we did it the flame went out but as soon as the copper wire was removed the flame came back. why?

    The copper wire absorbed most of the heat from the flame. Heat, oxygen are required for fire. When copper wire is removed, the candle continues to burn and the fire is re lighted
