Can America Be Energy Independent by 2020?

By energy indepedent, I mean we could import up to 10% of our oil to meet energy needs, but we could survive and not sustain significant economic impact if the supply of foreign oil were to be cut off? Is this realistic? Through a massive campaign of solar energy panels on commercial and government buildings could we wipe out 50-60% of our requirement to burn coal to generate electricity? Could we harness nuclear, ethanol based fuels, biodiesel and other vegetable based fuels? Could we all drive cars that get 50+ mpg or run on electrcity (solar powered) so that the demand for oil is vastly reduced??

If we can put men on the moon, why not? If would could harness an entire nation during World War II To convert our factories to make planes, tanks, jeeps and bombs, could we not harness our national power to mass produce and install solar panels?

Would the cost really be that great considering what we spend every year in energy and oil?

Why can't Americans think outside the box?

You need to move 300 million Americans to commit to a dramatic change in their lifestyle.... Not just elect some politicians who give speeches about it. Energy is a business, and that business will deliver what the market demands, and the market is 300 million Americans.

Why can't Americans think outside the box? They can, but acting outside the box is the challenge. Our current lifestyle based on high oil consumption is so comfy.

Why can't Americans think outside the box? What is this need for energy independence? What does it matter how much we spend for oil? They only get a devaluing paper currency anyway.

I think it would be great thing if we could. There are a lot of new ideas up in the air right now. I hope some of them work out.

    Listen carefully because this matters.

There is only one man that has the ideas and money to do something about the energy problem and he has started working on it.

    Politicians will not matter.

We could now if Congress would open up the drilling areas across our land
