There were American military advisers in Georgia, so it is very unlikely that Georgians provoked the Russians (by killing peacekeepers and shelling a contested city) on their own. The Russian media published photographs of dead African American military personnel (contractors aka mercenaries) they had killed. All in all, the timing of the whole thing was suspicious. It overshadowed the beginning of the Olympic Games and, indeed, might have helped McCain whose aggressive posture regarding US foreign relations might have seemed reasonable.

Please give me a break. Like those war mongers need an excuse to fight. That is their life, and it courses through their veins. The don't need anyone to provoke them, the are always provoked. Democrat for John McCain 2008.
