It depends whether you mean zooplankton (animals) or phytoplankton (plants). Disappearance of plankton would certainly affect the food chain, but there's another problem if the phytoplankton were to disappear: they provide about a third to a half of the atmosphere's oxygen.

plankton are the main source of nutrients in the ocean if they were to suddenly "vanish" the whole ecosystem in the ocean would suffer, whales would be one of the 1st organisms to die out or suffer serverly (sorry lol i cant spell ;p) then a chain reaction would occur (the chain being the oceanic food chain) eventually effecting all organisms in the ocean.

this would bring upon a oceanic disaster which would eventually effect us via economic status and hunger (no more fish n chips ='[)

    hope i helped^^

assuming you mean all of it.....very bad things.

Many fish and whales would die.....certainly some would survive on algae assuming whatever destroyed all the plankton magically left the algae alone. As long as the algae was unaffected, the majority of ocean life would survive, but ratios of the various species would certainly shift.

Thats a big problem. based on the the food chain and food web illustration. smaller fish and minute sea creatures are feeding mostly on plankton, they could die without it, in effect bigger fishes will be affected then the rest of the world. its a chain reaction. A circle of life.

The whole sea and all the animals in it will die, the flow on effects of that will be many birds and land animals would also become extinct. The effects on us would be a huge drop in available food, causing famine in some places.

It would be a chain reaction: fish dying, birds dying, awful smell, the economy of some countries ruined.
