I suggest the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld. It has action, romance and adventure without being too girly. Even though some people exclude the fourth book as being one of the series it is important to read.

You could also try the Blue is for Nightmares series by Laurie Stolarz. They don't have much action, but they do have a little romance and are quirky. Plus they aren't too girly.
