Most gated communities have an emergency gate entry code that EMS, Police, and FD are aware of (or at least dispatch is and they advised them!). Some gates have something similar that are at stop lights to alert the stop light that an emergency vehicle is approaching and the lights in the opposite way all turn red so the emergency vehicle can continue in a safer way. In the manner of gates, it senses the emergency vehicle and will open automatically. Some fire departments have "Knox boxes" located on the fire truck. This is a lock box in the fire truck that is opened by dispatch by a set of tones. The lock box contains a set of keys which will open another box at the premise (ie..apartment complex gate entry) and therefore giving the firefighters access. Hope this helps!

Some are given the gate code or opening device to have with them when needed. Others have a sensor on the gate that is activated by sound (siren) or strobe lights, "(3M Opticom). Others have a box like a realtors box that emergence responders have access to. These are some of the most common ways to access.

Many communities are going to a system that allows the first responders to open gates and doors using their radios. This system is silent and requires no added equipment for the first responders. Also does not require first responders to get out of their vehicles to find a key box. See www.click2enter.net

When you call them, you may have a numerical pad that you can give them the code number for. Some will have a key to get in as well. Could have someone go to let them in. Some communities have a guard at the station and they can let them in. But there is generally a way for them to get into gated communities. Ours has a code. We give it to the pizza delivery man when necessary. Some can release the gate via a phone call from the gate to the house and then the owner has a code at the gate that they push from their home and the phone activates the gate to open.

Where I live, gated communities are required to have certain number of gates that can be knocked away by a fire truck, and the fire dept knows which ones to use. I assume a police car with the bars on the bumper could get them down, too, without too much damage.

When we get cases by the computer the codes are listed in the case; and we usually remember them because of the frequent trips for domestic situations, etc.

If they are not on the computer dispatch can give them to us over the radio.

The gates have a special button on them for the police and fire dept. and they are the only ones who know where it is
