China was accepted into the IOC in 1922, but they didn't actually send anyone to the Olympics until 1932 (1 guy). They didn't compete in the winter games until 1980 and didn't win their first gold medal until 1984. They were banned from competing between 1956 and 1980 due to disagreements regarding whether the Communist government or the exiled government in Taiwan should represent China.

They first competed in the Olympics in 1984 at Los Angeles. This was significant because other countries in the Soviet bloc boycotted this Olympics. It was China's first foray into international sport after the ping-pong diplomacy.
