    Yes. Ram stands for Random Access Memory. It is like a mini hard drive that is much faster. It allows the computer to access important data quickly. The more ram you have, the more can be stored in it. This allows the computer to have fast access to certain files. This makes the computer run faster. For standard things like homework/internet, 1gb of ram will suffice on vista, and 512mb on XP.

    RAM=Random Access Memory

    Basically, it is where your computer stores information it is currently using, once it is filled then it has to transfer everything back and forth to your much slower hard drive.

    If you want a faster computer, definitely upgrade the RAM. You will need to find out what the max for your motherboard is and what type of RAM it takes. I recommend opening your computer and taking a picture (digital camera if you have one) of the RAM and of the model number and brand of your computer. Take this to Best Buy or Fry's Electronics (the latter having the best prices) and the salesmen there should be able to help you out.

    RAM is the easiest and usually the first way to speed up your computer. After that you may want to make sure your hard drive isn't maxed out and if it is, delete stuff. Then Replace the CPU with a better one. If you are doing video editing or intense gaming (not simple on-line games but like First Person Shooters or something) you may also want to look into a video card.

    ADDED:

    Someone said that 1gb is enough with vista and 512 mb with XP, that all depends on how basic you are. If you are running it to surf the net, yeah, that should work. However, I have 2gb with XP and still want more. (I do video editing and play first person shooters.) It all depends on what you are doing.

    RAM or Random Access Memory is where all the applications that are currently open ( including the Windows host files ) are stored and accesed by the CPU. As and when you close an application is closed it is deleted from the RAM any new application which is opened is copied from the hard drive. Every application requires certain amount of space available on RAM to run ( certain MB/GB ). Also your system can allott a part of your hardrive as RAM ( known as Virtual Memory ) which is used whwn your system is low on RAM. Your computer can handle a bit of difference but not a huge difference between the sytem requirements and what is available..

    RAM stands for Random-Access-Memory. It is like the short term memory of a computer. Whenever you run a program, instead of the program having to open each file for it run from the hard drive (which would take forever) it stores them in the ram and quickly access the necessary files. The more ram, the faster the computer can access the files needed to run programs and such.

    Random access memory - the more ram you have the more programs you can open at the same time. If you are typing a word document the words go into the ram until you save the document, then they go into the hard-drive. When you are browsing the internet the pages go into the ram.

    Most computer users have been trained that if you want more speed for your computer, then add more memory. Well, this is true, in certain circumstances. But for most of the times, it really is just bad files in your registry files. Corrupted or missing registry files can make your computer too slow.

    The registry is a main part of your computer's Operating System. With time, as you use Windows and install and uninstall programs, your registry will get congested and full of errors. So your computer could slow down. So, if you can clean it up this problem can be solved.Sometimes you can speed computer up by 300%. To clean up registry,You can download a software called regsitry cleaner---Clean registry,remnant,corrupt files and temp files,history,cookies,etc.. This site:

    http://www.fix-system.com/

    lists top 5 registry cleaner,you can download and scan for free.

    Good luck!
