What characteristics of Achilles made him a national hero?

I need 2 or 3 examples from the Iliad. Please help.

Single handedly, in Book XXI, he kills Trojans right and left so that the Skamander River overflows its banks with blood. He does in more Trojans than any other Greek--is utterly unstoppable, the only such.

He chases Hektor, the greatest Trojan warrior, around Troy and kills him in combat.

He acts as a just, compassionate judge of the games in Book XXIII.

After he wins, he shows noble dignity by returning Hektor's body (miraculously restored) to Priam, his grieving father--a decent, indomitable warrior.

Courage, bravery, skill, prior victories, admiration by his fellow warriors.
