Population growth problems are usually done by using the exponential equation

P = Po(e^-kt)

where

P = population at any time "t"

Po = initial population = 375,000 (given)

k = exponential constant = 0.0225 (given)

t = time

Given the above data, the equation is modified to

P = 375,000(e^-0.025t)

And when P = 1,000,000, the above becomes

1,000,000 = 375,000(e^-0.0225t)

2.667 = e^0.0225t

Taking the natural logarithm of both sides,

ln (2.667) = 0.0225t (ln e)

Since ln e = 1 and solving for "t",

t = (1/0.0225)(ln 2.667)

t = 43.6 years

t = 43 years and 7 months ~
