Sumerians had the first recorded gods anyway. I suspect man was trying to explain his surroundings long before he could write though.

No one knows, but figurines of what is believed to be a fertility goddess have been found in Çatalhöyük, which makes them ten to twelve thousand years old, at least.

...But not all cultures invented gods.

Until the Conquistadors, reached S. America, and even as late as the 1960s, there were tribes in the Amazon forest, that had no concept of gods.

The first documentation we have of mankind’s awareness of spirituality and his connection to it, and to something supernatural that is greater than himself, are the cave paintings in the south of France in the Upper Paleolithic era. This was during the Late Pleistocene age. The evidence suggests that after consuming hallucinogenic herbs, these cave men went on vision quests deep into the caves where they painted what they saw in their visions and these represent their understanding of their connection to the supernatural. These were the earliest prehistoric shamans. These paintings date to around 40,000 years ago, which mark the beginnings of modern homo sapiens. Google Lascaux Cave and you can read about it. Or get the book “The Mind in the Cave”.

Through one method or another, I would say it was whatever species of man first developed the ability to think abstractly. (So probably some tribe in Africa or the Middle-East Area)

They were frightened by some natural occurrence, and unable to explain it, thus they invented an antagonistic figure. Wanting someone to protect them from this figure, they invented another one, a god.

Everywhere, every culture, every people need (or needed) to believe in some god/gods/goddess. I think people was both scared of a world they couldn't dominate and aware that something more there have to be.

After the Great Flood of Noah, Noah's descendants knew of Almighty God the Creator of all and everything. Noah had a grandson named Nimrod. wife Sumerimas and son Tammuz. Nimrod means "to revolt or to rebel." Nimrod rebelled against God and his wife Sumerimas spawned many evil and false gods and goddesses so the Sumerians or Nimrod's group of the Tower of Babel started the false gods and goddesses. Jeremiah explains Sumerimas, Astaroth, Astarte, Ishtar, Isis, Aphrodite, Venus, Diana and all of these old false queens of heaven. They have many wicked names and they've come down strong in history. The most current one mentioned today is called "mother earth." To rebel against God and to keep from obeying the Lord man will go to extreme lengths to find a false god or goddess or a false religion to worship. Look at the stupid "flying spaghetti monster" created by a bunch of wet behind the ears college students.

Where are we today, but right back where we started from with false religions booming. Isn't it ironic, but Noah knew the true God and the Only God who saved him and his family. Noah was the Pre-Flood Culture but Noah had pure blood that was not polluted with fallen angel procreation. Noah carried the line of Christ until that baby was born in a manger in a little town called Bethlehem and who grew up and went to the Cross of Calvary for you and me. The Lord loved us so much that he bore the shame and the pain and shed His blood so we could get eternal life back. Adam lost eternal life in the Garden of Eden when he disobeyed God and sin and death came into the world. God had a plan from the foundation of the earth to get eternal life back for you and me. There is only One True God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob whose Son is Jesus the Christ.

Although the Sumerians had the first recorded Gods, we can guess that mankind has always thought up some deity to watch over him and make him feel nice.

The oldest known religion is shamanism, worshiped by cavemen. A central figure within the tribe was able to speak with the gods, primarily animal, sun, moon and elements.

Adam and EVE WORSHIPED GOD.They taught Cain who was the serpents son and his half brother Abel also about GOD.It was the serpent who had no faith or belief in GOD within himself. This lack of faith and understanding in cain is understood in his errant worship and his anger of that because his way wasn't GOD' way.GOD has been with us since the very beginning. THANK YOU D'S

The human race would still be in its' wild state of evolution no different from today's monkeys and gorillas if it wasn't for some kind of Divine intervention to branch off the human race from our wild primates. We didn't start our branch on the tree of evolution by our own doings or by mutation or our ancestors sick of being monkeys. Our branch as all branches of evolution was started by a genetic change under a microscope by a scientist who in our case is the God Yahweh.
