To whomever made the comment about Americans being racist... I truly take offense to that. And not just because I'm an American. When I saw this question and some of the uncalled for responses about whiners, I had to come and make a comment.
First of all, it is not just the Americans making accusations of cheating. I've read that an Austrailian shooter, a British boxer and Ukraine team have also spoken out about or filed complaints of favortism to Chinese athletes.
Now, please don't misunderstand me. I am not saying there is cheating going on. The question asked was, does anyone believe China is cheating? I can neither validate or invalidate 100% whether they cheated or not. I can only go by what I've read and heard. While this does not make me an expert, as a fan of the games I'm deeply troubled and have tried to listen to radio chats about the games and read news articles online to better educate myself on the subject.
In the case of the gymnastics, it does concern me that no one is wanting to make waves and go the extra mile to verify whether the gymnasts are 16 or not.
It isn't a matter of whether or not the Chinese women were the best. Yes, they were the best! They were better than the American women. Even after watching the men's and women's competitions, I couldn't begrudge the Chinese men and women their gold medals. They simply dominated.
BUT... being the best is not in question. What is in question is whether they followed the rules. Did they make star-studded teams using ineligible athletes?
Sure, these girls have passports issued from the government that state their ages to be 16. However, too many little things have been brought up. Like how previously, websites said the girls were 14. Now they say 16. Also, how can one overlook the fact that one of the young Chinese girls has lost a baby tooth? Topping this off, I read one or two websites where they said a reporter asked one of the girls how she celebrated her 15th birthday. The girl didn't correct the person about her age, but simply answered the question.
I will give my opinion here and say I just wish once and for all the IOC would conduct a thorough investigation, put aside ruffling the host country's feathers and find the truth. I've always heard that if you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to fear. And if these girls are indeed 16, like they claim, then the matter is settled! Done, laid to rest! And people will simply need to apologize and be quiet. That's all there is to it.
