You'd think that it would be doctor's #1 job to be informed and aware of diseases that are epidemic to the region. It's common that doctor's aren't though, and I think this has to do with a number of factors.
First, I think that doctors are tied in and up by insurance protocols and by protocols of the area. So if one doctor breaks out and gets much more aggressive, they may be in for a backlash.
Next, I've seen doctors get lazy. There is an infectious disease specialist in our area 3 hours east of you that fits that bill and this person is someone that you would think would be an expert.
Why? Well it probably comes back to protocol and money. I'm of the opinion that Lyme would probably break the bank for insurance companies if all cases were properly treated.
