You'd think that it would be doctor's #1 job to be informed and aware of diseases that are epidemic to the region. It's common that doctor's aren't though, and I think this has to do with a number of factors.
First, I think that doctors are tied in and up by insurance protocols and by protocols of the area. So if one doctor breaks out and gets much more aggressive, they may be in for a backlash.
Next, I've seen doctors get lazy. There is an infectious disease specialist in our area 3 hours east of you that fits that bill and this person is someone that you would think would be an expert.
Why? Well it probably comes back to protocol and money. I'm of the opinion that Lyme would probably break the bank for insurance companies if all cases were properly treated.Source(s): www.lymebook.com

You're not alone. Lyme awareness is an issue everywhere. Since there is really no offical cure more research is needed. Until the drug companies find a way to make it a Billion dollar industry, I wouldn't hold my breath. I know people that had to drive 2-3 states away to find a doctor that would even humor the idea of Lyme.

You're right, they should be. In the meantime, individuals need to become informed on their own, to protect themselves and their families.

Given the geography in Utica - I'm very surprised that the docs aren't more educated about it. Good Luck finding someone who listens/ takes you seriously - sometimes it seems that the docs become "numb" and don't really hear what we tell them.
