Russia and Georgia are at war currently over the 2 breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Namely South Ossetia. The President of Georgia, Saakashvili, won the first truly democratic election in Georgia and a major policy that he proposed was, the reclamation of South Ossetia for Georgia, as when the Soviet Union dissolved into multiple countries. They originally controlled these 2 areas. While the areas themselves almost hold little to no value. The country of Georgia holds massive value to the Western Powers. (i.e. the oil pipeline from Caspian Sea which runs right through it.) They also recently pushed for Georgia's induction into NATO, which Russia opposes because it doesn't want to be surrounded by the Military alliance. But the current war started over Georgia invading the small South Ossetia. The Russians, who have very close ties with Ossetia, including giving them Russian Passports due to the fact they don't have international recognition. Comes to their assistance after the capital is taken. The Georgian forces are then overrun and the Russian military claims it has no intentions of entering Georgia, we saw how reliable that claim was. Leading to escalation of the conflict and Abkahzia reclaiming the sliver of land that still belonged to Georgia that they claimed was theirs. Current situation is Georgia is reportedly split in half with the Russians apparently agreeing to a cease-fire. Where it goes from there, I dunno. Hope this helped.

Georgia went into Russia to hunt down some rebels, Russia responded by going into Georgia; but as of today, the Russian forces have withdrawn and there's a ceasefire.

We're heavily involved here, because Georgia has been the major recipient of US aid in the last ten years (after Isreal). the objective being to build/maintain an oil pipeline from central Asia to ports on the Mediterannean. This pipeline is impt., because oil from central Asia would be an alternative to Russian oil - Thus, Russia could not use the threat of cutting of oil to Western Europe.

Georgia did not attack Russia. It attacked a break-away region of South Ossetia (it used to be a part of Georgia). As the Russians were giving away Russian passports to Ossetians like candy, they consider them Russian. So, when the Russians moved in, it was to protect their compatriots from the Georgian attack. Of course, Russians being Russians are not familiar with a concept of moderation. So they moved into Ossetia, Abkhasia, and Georgia proper.
