I am in sales. I used to have a boss that said, "Take advantage of your unfair advantages."
Sometimes being white works against you. For example, I now ride the bus a couple of days a week to save on gas. The bus stops a short walk from my house and a short walk from my work. It only takes an extra 10 minutes to get to work and, because I don't half to deal with traffic, I am much more relaxed when I get there.
Because there is rarely a white person on the bus, I get treated very differently-even by the driver. (I think they think I am a cop or something.)
I have never owned a slave. I don't think my ancestors did either but, even if they did, I'm not responible for what they did.
My best advice is simply to get over it. In my opinion, if everyone stopped worrying about what color the other person was, we wouldn't have near the problems we have now. Therefore, simply feeling uncomfortable because you are white actually prolongs the problem.
