Interesting... especially the bits about him "smuggling" Bibles into countries that hadn't banned the Bible at all. Sure, they weren't that happy about people being religious, but it wasn't banned.
The U.S.S.R. never banned religion, neither did any country behind the Iron Curtain... they curtailed a lot of the freedoms to congregate, and not just for the purposes of religion, so how could he be said to be smuggling Bibles in? Smuggling requires the items in question be illegal in that country... which Bibles weren't.
Same with China... They never really banned Religion in any form. (well, except the whole Tibetian Monk thing... but that was because they were trying to remove any sense of the Tibetian Nation, the Monks being a very visible part of that) In fact, you do realise that there were never fewer than 500 OFFICIALLY SANCTIONED Christian Churches in China from the Revolution to the end of the 20th Century?
As for his activities in Muslim countries... I'm not sure that Lebenon, Israel and the Palestinian territories really count as Muslim countries where the Bible is banned... thus, no smuggling nor is he in danger of losing his head.
So... what did he do that was so special again? Other than do something that people believed was dangerous (because they fell for the Propaganda spread about during the Cold War) that wasn't anything of the kind...
