You need antibiotic ointment if it is bacterial pink eye.

Pink eye can show up when you least expect it, and it is very contagious. There is more than one type of pink eye, and how you treat it depends on the type. If it is bacterial you need antibiotic ointment or drops. There is no particular treatment for viral pink eye. If it is an allergy that is causing your difficulty you may need anti-inflammatory medication or antihistamines. Frequent hand washing is crucial to prevent spreading the virus or bacteria, depending on which type you have. There is also something called CLARE, or contact lens induced acute red eye. Sleeping in contacts makes the eye more susceptible to inflammation/infection.

Yes...and WASH YOUR HANDS religiously...it is highly contagious and you will easily spread it to your other eye and the eyes of others in your house just by touching things ie pens, pencils, mouse, keyboard, door handles, etc Use lysol or some type of disinfectant and again, WASH YOUR HANDS and try not to touch your eye!

Also encourage anyone else in your home to wash their hands more often too!

Yes, but even if it weren't, I'd say get them anyway. The stop discharge and the soreness right away and while you still may have some discomfort, it's no way near as bad as in the beginning. It's really quick-acting!
