First, you can simply divide on a calculator, but if the decimal points confuse you do the following:

First look at both the numerator and the denominator. See what number you have to multiply both by (10, 100, 1000, 10,000...) to get rid of the decimals. In this case the 12.86 requires a two decimal point move so you multiply numerator and denominator by 100.

0.4 x 100

----------------- =

12.86 x 100

40 / 1286. Then take out your calculator and divide. Without the decimal points it's very hard to go wrong.

40 / 1286 = .03114

With the limitations on Yahoo Answers I really can't do this by long division. Sorry!

Simply 0.4/12.86 as follows:

0.4/12.86 = 40/1286 = 20/643 Now do the regular division:

and you will get the answer = 0.031104

look at how many digits you have after the decimal

for example, 0.4 has one digit after the decimal

also, 12.86 has two digits after the decimal

next, after recognizing the above do this

0400/12860 = 40/1286 = 0.0311
