Jesus was using familiar features in the lives of the people He was preaching to in order to get them to think. You see birds flying around all of the time and they have plenty to eat even though they don't plant any food or save any up for winter and no human provides for them. You see beautiful flowers coming up from the muddy ground. Where does the bird's food come from? How do flowers turn mud water into beautiful colors? It has to be God causing these things to take place. Then Jesus asks people to consider how much more valuable people are than birds or plants that grow up one day and are cut down and burned the next day. He concludes with the statement that if people will honor God by seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness that God will honor them by making sure that all of their basic needs are met.

It means a beauty amongst uglies.

If one candidate stands out because the others are foolish and bungling-that candidate would be a lily amongst thorns.

The lily is the innocent flower of beauty amongst evil and pain.
