oh man - I could list songs for you all day.

So rather than songs, let me just give you some artists to check out.

First off, I love the style you just described also, and what you need to do first and foremost is check out every thing that Motown records put out in the 60s and early 70s. Some of these names include:

    The Temptations

    David Ruffin

    Eddie Kendricks

    Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

    Martha Reeves & The Vandellas

    The Marvelettes

    Mary Wells

    Jimmy Ruffin

Though he wasn't on Motown, I recommend getting into Ray Charles if you haven't already - he was a hell of a musician/songwriter.

Other good oldies stuff (these aren't soul groups, but were EXTREMELY influential groups that had an impact on all popular music)

The Beach Boys (listen to the album "Pet Sounds" - it will blow you away)

The Beatles (I assume you know who they are).
