Anxiety disorder/panic attacks/..help?

I have an anxiety disorder, I'm always so nervous and I find myself crying through out my panic attacks because I'm scared, But this is usually in public, and I'm tired of it all.

My question is, If I told my regular doctor about it, would he prescribe the medication (antidepressants) to me?

or would he have to refer me to a psychiatrist first?

I don't want to talk to a psychiatrist, I feel very uncomfortable about it.

My doctor gave me antidepressants which help my chemical imbalance. He would have wanted me to go to a psychiatrist if I had serious problems though.

OMG. lol . I just went to a pyschiatrist's office today! I have been putting it off for years. I saw one years ago.. did not love it and did not go back or go on meds. etc. because I had no insurance and it would have cost too much to continue etc. The place my friend took me to today did not need to have a doctor's referral ( I did not want to see a doctor). But they asked me to have some lab work done for my own safety through all this and that I should see a doctor regularly. That is the part that I don't love the doctors. But you do need a psychiatrist's referall for meds. and this one I had today was great. Did not get into lots of details about my life just asked me why I felt I needed something and asked me what methods I'd like to take and what I wanted to see happening. Just keep asking around if you don't find one you like right off. Good luck!

Ya man you are in great shape. As far as the pains go... that is SOOooo typical. Realize this: You are ok. You really are. You are in better shape then most people. Those pains are caused by anxiety and they are real but they aren't going to cause your death. In fact as you relax you will notice the pains will subside. I suffered with anxiety for 6 years. It sucks. Docs kept putting me on depression meds but they all made me worse. FINALLy my doc gave me some lorazapam for a plane trip. Turns out that it stops your brain from making the chemical that gives you anxiety with no side effects. I felt the ever slightest bit dizzy but I was so happy. It was like someone flipped a switch in my head and I was able to be me again. I still have mild anxiety now but I can control it and live life again. Analyze your life. There is something in it that is conflicting and causing your anxiety. My cause was my ex and my old job. I left them both and was almost completely better within 2 to 3 months. One last note: You should change your name to "healthy as an Ox". I wish my cholesterol was that low.

Hi there, I just laugh about my past 3 years of panic now. I was not able to go anywhere without carrying xanax. Fear of having another attack was the most important subject of my days. When i first found joe barry's web site i started to cry because of my happiness.

You need to end the sufferring. Go to a psychiatrist you shouldn't have to be publicly embarrassed. I felt the same way but then i went to a psychiatrist and they really really helped me. You just have to tell them everything because then they can't help you. They deal with tons of people like you so they have great advice and tools to help, so you have to trust them because they will really help you! :]

No. Your regular doctor would refer you to a psychiatrist. You need to talk to him/her! Seems to me like you're generally an uncomfortable person, so...just talk to the psychiatrist.

    Hi

Try to talk to the counselor first. Try to stay away from medication if possible. Anxiety can be treated without medication.
