"The IOC suspended Iraq for "political interference" in its national Olympic committee which was sacked in May and replaced by a new panel headed by Jaafar. It had warned that sanctions could be imposed after the committee and other sports bodies were disbanded"

The IOC's decision has nothing to do with the Iraq war, it's because the Iraqi government broke the rules. The current war in Iraq might have influenced that because of political instability, but IOC has no control over that and they have to follow the rules.

Just like when they ended baseball and softball as olympic sports. Baseball is a great sport for Americans, South Americans, Asians, but not so for the Europeans. Softball keeps the lesbians happy.
