The word can be used in different ways, but I think it usually refers to a novel (often by a famous writer) that wasn't very good. So the manuscript was shoved in a trunk for a while...maybe years. Then when the author became famous, they brought it out, dusted it off and sold it. So usually even with the edits, it's not a very good book. Often it's a earlier work. It's not unusual for writers to complete 2 or 3 novels before they get good enough to be published.
Sometimes trunk novels are never published by the author. After his or her death, the relatives may sell it.
