The doctor needs to check for direct antibodies because often many of those with HCV infection are found to have normal alt and ast levels. ( enzymes). This is why so many go undiagnosed, yet continue to have symptoms.
DIRECT ANTIBODY TEST and do not let the doctor shrug this off!!!! They can't stand it when you know more than they do!!! DEMAND an antibody test!!! Simply put: If you do have hcv, TREAT NOW not later! This increases your chance of a sustained virologic response!
As for having HCV? it's not a death sentence!!! People often fear the treatment, when they should fear the disease! Antiviral chemotherapy is NOT THAT BAD if you know what to do to have an easier go of treatment, ie, drinking plenty of water will greatly reduce side effects as with taking in conjunction with treatment, antidepressants and/or anti-anxiety meds! Your LIFE IS NOT OVER if you have HCV, it is ONLY JUST BEGINING!
Suffered DECADES and slept most of my life away- now I can't hardly sleep and it's WONDERFUL!

Had chronic HCV but went undiagnosed for 26+ years because my enzymes were either real close to normal or normal....and you can still have hcv chronic infection if they are normal!!!
