    It's pretty much illegal everywhere.

Most states apply driving laws to cyclists (signals, lane obedience, DUI, etc.) with additional laws specific to cyclists, so it is VERY illegal to bicycle with headphones on.

If you are involved in an accident with a car while wearing headphones, and the driver takes note or it ends up in the police report, their liability is waived and that's a big bummer for you.

If you are involved in an accident with a pedestrian or cyclist while you are wearing headphones, you are 100% liable and can usually be arrested for gross negligence.

With the big budget crunch here in Chicago, many cyclists are being ticketed for violating driving laws and this is one of many included.

In other states, the law against "distracted driving" specifies headphones and bicycles too like CA state law.

You're kidding yourself. Your neighborhood is probably the most dangerous place to ride because everyone else thinks nothing's happening there, so they're not paying attention either. Kids playing, housewives careening around in SUV's while yapping on the phone, loose dogs. I have many more near misses on the mile it takes to get out of my neighborhood than anywhere else - and I ride thousands of miles a year. Your brain has to divide its processing power between the music and other external inputs like vision, as well as separate music from road, vehicle and other noise. Inevitably, that slows your reaction time. A surprise, whether a pothole, squirrel, flung open car door, or parked vehicle pulling away from the curb without signalling is going to take more time for the alarm bells to get to your brain and back to your muscles. When I'm passing you, I have to yell 'on your left' twice as loud to get your attention. That means I have to be loud enough to scare the living crap out of anyone I pass without headphones. Lose the headphones.

The really funny thing about laws against wearing headphones is that it is not illegal to drive or ride a bike if you are totally deaf, but you can't listen to 'tunes while cycling. I think it's more the distraction factor than whether or not you can hear.....

I'm sure it could be. I think it's illegal to drive with them on. I have been pulled over by a cop on my bike for going thru a stop sign. So you never know.

yeah it is where i am(Singapore)ya actually get slapped a fine like 70 bucks for that crap, its kinda dangerous to have the volume too high as ya wouldn't be able to hear someone horn and try to warn ya...i've had close calls before coz i listen to death metal and i crank the volume to the max,its alright if ya on a bicycle though,as long as ya bike on the walk way it shouldn't hurt much..maybe ya should just use it on one side to be on the safe side, just remember night lights so others can see ya when ya bike at night...enjoi

My dad has a motorcycle and usually listens to his headphones while riding, and a cop said he wasn't allowed to have both headphones in his ears.

It may be different with a bicycle, but maybe next time you see a police officer, ask them?

I do not think its illegal and I don't think we need another stupid legislation to cover for what ought tobe covered by common sense and logic. Its sheer stupidy to have one's ears covered while cycling with cars around.
