When Alice arrives at the tea party, the Mad Hatter and the March Hare, are having tea, with a Dormous sitting between them asleep, they are using the dormouse as a cushion with their elbows. They cry out 'No room! No room!' when they see Alice coming, but she sits down anyway. They offer her wine, but then say there isn't any.

The Hatter asks Alice "why is a raven like a writing desk?" but when she can't guess he tells her he doesn't know the ansewr. He says his watch has stopped because it has butter in the works. The hatter pours tea on the dormouse's nose to wake him up. The Dormouse tells them a story about three sisters who lived down a treacle well. In the end, they are so rude to Alice that she gets up and walks off, she looks back and sees the March hare and the hatter trying to stuff the dormouse into the teapot.

In the Disney movie, Alice invites herself to a tea party...and despite strong clues from the March Hare and the Mad Hatter that she hasn't been invited and not welcome, she sits down and makes herself comfortable.

By this time in the story, Alice seems to be tired of all the madness. But to a British girl, how could things go wrong at a tea party?
