Get a book on baking and follow the directions. There's really no other way to do it -- baking is rather a fiddly discipline and you can't tweak the recipes too much or failure will ensue. A few recommendations (at least on American baking):
"The King Arthur Flour Baker's Companion"
"I'm Just Here For More Food" by Alton Brown
"Baking Illustrated" by Cooks Illustrated Magazine
"The Italian Baker" by Carol Field
"Baking with Julia" by Julia Child and Dorie Greenspan
"Crust and Crumb" by Peter Reinhart (mostly about bread)
"The Tassajara Bread Book" by Edward Espe Brown
You may find different books if you're outside the US, though these should be available through Amazon anyway.

There are a lot of simple ways to bake things. The most simple way is probably pre-heating the oven to 350 Degrees, let it sit for about 10 minutes, and decide what you're baking. If you're baking a cake, wait until it keeps rising, and it will be good after it stops rising for a limited time. If you're baking something like cookies, bread, or anything that you want to something smooth or crunchy, wait until they are golden brown.
