Summary of School is bad for children”

In“School is bad for children,” John Holt argues that the children are more knowledgeable to learn on their own than the school try to give them. Just like babies don’t know what language is but they find out the ways to learn and use it.

Two main points to figure out what did the school want teach the children. First, Holt argues that learning and living are been separated in school. Second, He claims that in real life, children shouldn’t do anything unless they got requested to do. They are limited by learning. They only can follow the steps that school wants to give. During school life, he complains he learned something indifferent ways to survive in that terrible place. So he thinks school is just a useless time waster to children. But otherwise he suggests school can let children out of school to learn about the world, or get children into other people’s life. Moreover he thinks children can work together find out each other’s advantages or defects, or they should be allowed to learn how to judge their own work.
