What Smokey said was "The older the BERRY the sweeter the juice." He was trying to say "The blacker the berry the sweeter the juice." Which means that darker black women are better in bed, or something to that effect.

soontobewed is right on target. If you had grown up in a pine forest in North Carolina as I did, and the forest was full of old growth wild blackberry bushes as ours was, you would learn very quickly that the largest blackest blackberries were the sweetest, and you would look for those to eat. They were not chosen for making pies, as they had no tartness left in them: for pies you would seek out the blackberries that were not so ripe, a mixture of red and black.

When the Black Pride movement developed, it was quite natural that the (predominantly Southern) blackberry analogy was readily adopted, as it pointed to a genuine and demonstrable fact that the blacker something was, the more desirable it could be.

isn't it obvious? Look at a berry, when it is darker in color it tastes better becuase it has ripened. The more "ripened" the berry the better it tastes...
