In the show Arrested Development, what does "hop-on" mean in reference to driving the stair car?

In several episodes of the t.v. show Arrested Development some of the characters make reference to a having a "hop-on" while driving the families airplane stair car. What exactly is a "hop-on"?

It means when someone "hops" onto the stair car, as in they're sitting on the back of it while someone's driving. I found this a bit confusing too. It wasn't until Michael tells Lindsey she going to get "live-ins" when refering to the cabin car that I understood it fully.

i think it s a part of the driving test that u get to stop your car in the middle of the the slopes, stop the car by holding the brake and then get over the slope by release the clutch and brake smoothly

I wish my Dad let me drink and drive when I was only 20 months old. I had to wait until I was three. Will you adopt me?
