What is the problem with solar energy?

The sun seems like the cleanest, cheapest way to power our planet. Why haven't there been any initiatives to research this technology further? Or have there been? What's stalling the process?

In large parts of the country it can't produce enough energy to be a total solution, particularly in winter. The initial outlay to put a system in is quite expensive. For a homeowner it would be $50K for any significant energy output.

California has just started an initiative. Schwarzenegger recently announced the most ambitious program - Southern California Edison, the region's largest utility, installing solar cells on 65 million square feet of commercial rooftops over the next five years. “When it’s complete, it will produce enough power for 162,000 homes,” he said.

My significant situation is with our authorities taking my tax funds to subsidize those which have money to purchase the platforms. because image voltaic platforms at the prompt are not not pricey by ability of itself advantages, the authorities is utilising our confusing earned tax funds to help the added wealthy purchase those platforms. the following in Arizona (sunlight shines particularly a lot 360 days a 12 months) a good length gadget for my homestead value $40,000 put in. i'm able to then get a $21,000 rebate / credit from the application company, federal taxes, and state taxes, so my up the front value is amazingly decrease than $20,000. My payback era will be about 16-18 years WITH SUBSIDIES AND REBATES. This sounds tremendous, yet at the starting up i don't have this kind of money. maximum individuals do not. the basically those that would take earnings of those courses are the added wealthy which have money to spend, and they are utilising MY TAX funds that permits you to shop! it is loopy. you're taking from the a lot less fortunate and making the wealthy richer. Screw them. i do not pick my confusing earned tax funds getting used this kind!

It isnt cost efficient. They only way people or towns can buy solar panels to produce energy is because Solar Panel manufaturers are subsidized by the government. Take away these subsidies and it is way too expensive to use solar panels. As technology increases solar energy will become more efficient thus more cost effective.

Because the people who run the US are wealthy old money families that have investments or own the oil companies and they want to continue to get richer to pass the money down through the leneage so they can continue to control the economy and this country for futures generations. Simple as that.

BTW Solar is not expensive in contrast to the number of lives we have lost in Iraq which is really all about controlling who has the oil and who is going to get the oil!!

it was the cost to make and maintain, and the little amount of energy that kept solar from being the dominant energy source, but new technologies are improving efficiency, so I fully expect it to make a big comeback.

No good methods to store the energy created. Other than that, I think solar energy would work real well in sunny areas to boost the economy of places who have no real climate for a strong agriculture industry.

But for it to be a feasible solution nationwide, it would have to be turned into a government service like water department, and that would be claimed to be socialism.

he only solution that will be feasible and generate enough profit to not be considered socialism by corporatists, is nuclear energy and nuclear produced hydrogen for fuel.

It doesnt provide nearly enough power that we need. On top of that its expensive, and to high of cost to maintain.

It gets dark at night and oftentimes it is cloudy during the daytime.

Should we all just turn off our heat and lights when these things occur??

    Sunshine is free.

That is a huge problem for capitalists.

Reserching new ways to dig and find where to dig is a much better thing to put money into.

Because it goes against the laws of thermodynamics. When heat is converted to energy heat is lost. Massive solar panels means massive ice age.
