Well, I had to go for this National Service earlier this year. I was in the first batch of 2008, December 29th(2007) until March 11th(2008).
I traveled all the way from Selangor to Sarawak. I was anti-social, I had to be home-schooled the last two years of my school life.. So for me to be thrown in the midst of 400 people all of a sudden had a huge impact on me; I broke down. But somehow I managed to come out of my shell and make lots of friends and learn alot about the different cultures there.
I think this whole National Service thing is quite rigged, though. I shall not say why.. It has to do with our government, so go figure.. lol..
Meeting new people, making friends and traveling around would be the only benefits, in my opinion.
If I had to pick whether its good or bad, I should say bad, but that's just based on my traumatizing experience. But, if anyone reading this is gonna be joining the National Service, have an open mind. I only started to enjoy it when I finally accepted the place I was in, by then, it was already the end. Hope they cancel this thing though, waste of money.. Money which could be used to help the people and animals(although, I doubt anyone cares for them anymore..) in Malaysia..
Edit : The National Service runs for approximately 3 months. Trying to change someones personality, lifestyle and basically the way they grew up for 17 years in a matter of 3 months is near impossible.
