it means there is a word in the phrase that is the same and connects two different phrases. What's up dude and dude ranch become one sentence.

before and after blends two phrases into one. In your example the two phrases are:

"What's up dude" and "dude ranch".

The middle word or words of the puzzle pertain to both phrases with additional word(s) BEFORE and AFTER.

Other examples might be something like:

    Mr. Potato Head Games

    Home Sweet Home Loan

    Wheel of Fortune Cookie

A "before and after" question requires a combination of two phrases. The end of the first phrase is the beginning of the next phrase. So "What's up dude" and "dude ranch" are the two phrases, and they share the word "dude" as the last word of one phrase and the first word of the next. Jeopardy also has a "before and after," and they have clues, like "This president of the United States is a nocturnal primate." And the answer would be "George Bush Baby." Because George Bush is a president, and a "bush baby" is a nocturnal primate.

It means you actually have two parts in the asnwer...the before and the after. In this case "Whats up dude" would be the before and "dude ranch" would be the after.
