The North Shore area in Minnesota is beautiful. Grand Marais is a great town, about 100 mi north of Duluth. If you don't want to go up that far, any small town by the shore is worth it. Duluth is a great place to be, a college town, so there's a lot to do. If you prefer to be close to the big city, and more central, Stillwater is right on the border by WI, on the Mississippi. One of may favorites is the area of Sault Ste. Marie in the Upper Peninsula of MI. I wouldn't expect you to go swimming on Lake Superior (too cold!), but so worth going to enjoy the area. There are so many lakes around, if you don't like one, move away a few more miles! Enjoy:=)
