Coptic or Coptic Egyptian[6] (Ⲙⲉⲧⲣⲉⲙ̀ⲛⲭⲏⲙⲓ Met.Remenkīmi) is the final stage of the Egyptian language, a northern Afro-Asiatic language spoken in Egypt until at least the seventeenth century CE. Egyptian began to be written using the Greek alphabet in the first century CE. The new writing system became the Coptic script, an adapted Greek alphabet with the addition of six to seven signs from the demotic script to represent Egyptian phonemes absent from Greek. Several distinct Coptic dialects are identified, the most prominent of which are Sahidic and Bohairic.

As developmental phases of Egyptian, both Coptic and Demotic are grammatically closely akin to Late Egyptian, which was written in the hieroglyphic script, but differ significantly in their graphic representation. Coptic flourished as a literary language from the second to thirteenth centuries CE, and its Bohairic dialect continues to be the liturgical language of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria. It was supplanted by Egyptian Arabic as a spoken language toward the early modern period, though some revitalization efforts have been underway since the nineteenth century. Some claim that it never went extinct.[2][7][8][9]

The Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria (Coptic:

Ϯⲉⲕ'ⲕⲗⲏⲥⲓⲁ 'ⲛⲣⲉⲙ'ⲛⲭⲏⲙⲓ 'ⲛⲟⲣⲑⲟⲇⲟⲝⲟⲥ ti.eklyseya en.remenkimi en.orthodoxos ente alexandrias, literally: the Egyptian Orthodox Church of Alexandria) is the official name for the largest Christian church in Egypt. The Church belongs to the Oriental Orthodox family of churches, which has been a distinct church body since the Council of Chalcedon in AD 451, when it took a different position over Christological theology from that of the Eastern Orthodox and Western churches, then still in union. The precise differences in theology that caused the split are still disputed, highly technical and mainly concerned with the Nature of Christ. The foundational roots of the Church are based in Egypt but it has a worldwide following.

According to tradition the Coptic Orthodox Church is the Church of Alexandria which was established by Saint Mark the apostle and evangelist in the middle of the 1st century (approximately AD 42). The head of the church and the See of Alexandria is the Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of All Africa on the Holy See of Saint Mark, currently His Holiness Pope Shenouda III. More than 95% of Egypt's Christians belong to the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, though other churches also claim Patriarchates and Patriarchs of Alexandria; among them:

The term Coptic usually is used to refer to a version of Christianity that existed in Egypt up until about the end of the third century. It is called Coptic in reference to the language being used at the time. The Gnostic Gospels are an example of many of their beliefs. These documents were discovered in 1947 in Nag Hammadi, Egypt. They are mystical in teaching and date to about the second or third century. They were considered heretical by the early church due to their differences from the orthodox views.

From the Catholic point of view, the coptics are one of the eastern rite churchs. Rome is western. The easter rites were formed by the apostles and grew developing their own style over centuries. When communication was established between the different churches around Europe and middle east, significant differences had developed in style but not theology.

The only problem was whether they would recognise which sea would be recognised as primary. The east rites retained the right to autonomy but in fact no great theological difference exist and they often follow Rome's lead, just in their own time.

There is the Coptic Catholic one of the Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church and the Coptic Orthodox one of the Branches of the Orthodox Church. Their Christian History traces its roots to St. Mark, the Apostle. The Patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church is also referred to as the Pope.
