I hope it's Romania because I'm part of a sweepstake, and I pulled Romania out of the hat.
None of them deserve to go through.
Italy have shown how threadbare their squad is. Below the starting 11 there really aren't any options at all. Tactically I've noticed an inability to change anything, which is a damning criticism of Donadoni. When Toni isn't on form they struggle to score.
The midfield doesn't impress me. Gattusso isn't involved in any games this year, he's completely lost his ability to control the midfield for Italy.
I've never been a big fan of Pirlo. He flatters to decieve. A few brilliant cross-field passes every now and again does not win you a game, and when playing in a 451 it contributes nothing at all. His free-kick taking is so overrated! The man hits the target once in every 15 free-kicks, and rarely scores!
The defence seems to lack discipline without Cannovaro. Matterazzi isn't safe on his own!
Buffon proved against Romania that he's the only thing keeping Italy in Euro 2008.
France have so many problems that could easily be solved, but just won't be.
Against the Netherlands we saw a string of changes, but little change in the end result.
Domenech has finally put Evra in the starting 11 after steadfastly sticking to his Lyon biases with Abidal. But Thuram is far too old for the pace of this tournament. Gallas as everybody knows looses his head too easily.
Coupet isn't up to it, and the backup goalies maybe the worst of any country in the competition.
The midfield is so un-organised it's hard to believe. Toulalan tries hard, but isn't up to it. Makelele is too old, and complains far too much, slowing France's game down. Malouda lacks confidence, and looks out of his depth. Riberry thinks he can do the job on his own when it's plainly obvious that he can't. Malouda needs to be dropped, Riberry shifted to left-wing, and a risk needs to be taken by putting Nasri in the unfamiliar position of right-wing. Either that or Domenech has to swap to the dreaded 433.
Up front they are shocking. Henry isn't anywhere near the player he was 2 years ago. Benzema and Anelka are too alike, and have unrealistic opinions of their abilities. They lack the discipline to stay in the middle. Govou is their best striker at the moment, but he lacks the spark to make it internationally. Gomis isn't up to it yet, and probably won't ever be.
Romania are capable of so much more. Their defence is a well-oiled machine. They work well defensively because they have a flat back 4, with protection ahead of them in the form of Chivu, who goes about his work quietly and classily. The defense's good work gives Labont in goal plenty of confidence, and he in return gives his defenders confidence.
Defensively the midfield is fine, but on the attacking front they're slow to react. Sometimes I see that when Romania break, apart from Mutu and Niculae, the players furthest forward are Contra and Rat, the full-backs. This has to change against Holland, or they will find it impossible to score.
Mutu is a star for Romania, but I don't think he's ever had the bottle to lead the Romanians to their (and his) full potential. Niculae is a hard worker but lacks any real class as far as I'm concerned, and can come off as a headless chicken.
Who will go through? I actually see Romania doing it.
I think Romania will get a hard-fought 0-0 draw against a 3rd gear Dutch side, celebrating getting through so easily.
The French and the Italians will have a 1-1 draw. Both teams will be defensive from start to finish, and will not change their systems throughout the game!
