Why do people believe in creationism/"intelligent design"?

When science shows that evolution is the origin of species

Update:

oh btw, just because it has the name "theory" doesn't mean it lacks validity. Theory is a scientific term that explains how things work. Laws are simple statements of how things act i.e. "an object in motion stays in motion unless of an outside force." Don't forget, gravity is a theory too, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist!

Update 2:

Zodiark, what are you talking about??? How is it a genetic problem??? If anything it's a genetic "solution"

Many supporters of intelligent design will attempt to pass it off as a non-religious idea. They claim that there is a supernatural force that created everything, but intentionally leave it ambiguous as to what exactly that force is. Of course, it isn't difficult to see what they mean.

The "theories" of creationism and intelligent design cannot even be called such. A theory is something that can be tested and falsified. There is no way to apply the scientific method to either of those two things; therefore, they have no place in the realm of science.

Of course, that will not stop people from subscribing to such beliefs. They (and I am talking about Christians in Western nations, of course) have a book that purports to tell them the truth of the life and the universe. When compared to science, certain things just don't mesh well. How does the bible account for dinosaurs or other fossils when the earth is only 6,000 years old? This is only one example of an outright conflict between science and a literal interpretation of scripture.

Unfortunately, even with faced with evidence (both for scientific claims and against biblical claims), people refuse to budge. They insist that their millenia-old book has all the answers because it is easy to do so. Don't understand something? Well, God did it. How could a man survive for three days in the belly of any aquatic creature? God made it happen. How could a woman just turn into salt? God.

When you stop believing in the Bible as literal truth, a whole new set of problems opens up. If Genesis is an allegory, then there was no original sin. If there was no original sin, then mankind was never eternally punished with sin. If mankind was never eternally punished with sin, then there was no need for Jesus to die for our sins. It's a vicious chain reaction of problems, and those people who believe in a 6,000-year-old, intelligently-designed/created earth see evolution as an affront to their beliefs, simply because their narrow interpretation of a really old book leaves no room for it.

I disagree that science shows that evolution is the origin of the species. If that were the case, then why is it called the Theory of Evolution instead of being called the Law of Evolution?

I don't disagree that we evolve to a point, but I can't accept that man came from monkeys and so forth.

The real question should be that, even if, the entire framework of earthly species evolved from some single cell organism, then where did that single cell organism come from?

The point is that there is a Creator. How can people who claim to be the thinking people and take logic over faith possibly believe that everything in this world just came together by chance? Such a chance that there has not been anything found anywhere around like our planet, or the inhabitants of our planet. We are currently searching the universe only to be disappointed each time we realize that the latest discovery cannot possibly support live, nor has it ever. If evolution is the key to life, then why aren't we seeing it on other planets? What about Earth allows evolution to take hold and prosper when it started out just as all of the other planets, stars, and galaxies in the universe.

Evolution as a theory of the creation of our existence just doesn't make sense.

Because it is not the origin of humanity that is the issue. A couple of wackos have said that accepting it means you hate and spit on God and the idea of God because instead of enjoying life and wondering at how God did things you are supposed to think about death all day every day until you finally die.

It isn't true but those twits have said it and people take what they say as pure truth because they have funny hats.

So because of this statement it leads people to think that if they accept Evolution all the sudden there will be incest and beastiality as norms and that murder will become a virtue, and all the stupid crap that idgit fundies spout.

So it becomes not about the origin of species but about morality, the meaning of life, etc.

It is a BS argument and a false assumption....but since most people are idiots they buy into it and by doing so reject life, light and love in exchange for the promise that if we all hate ourselves we will have bliss in the afterlife.

    These are 2 separate ideas.

ID is a scientific theory...not a Christian or creationist theory. Most people think that ID is something the Christians came up with-this is not true.

I may be mistaken...its not my field,...but I believe it was Albert Einstein who first gave mention of ID. Many scoffed at this many years ago. There are a large group of scientist who have taken a public stand against Darwinism. It is from this group that ID has been revived--not in the creationist movement.

BTW....science has not yet... "shown that evolution is the origin of the species". Evolution has been elevated to fact only in the opinions of the of the believers of this nonsense.

Look at the history of science

    Astronomy in particular

Some people draw a conclusion, then try to fit the facts to that conclusion.

This is the same kind of thinking that the world was flat, and that the earth was the center of the universe. Even after the invention of the telescope and proof of these theories being false, people still believed them. Trying to bend the facts and new data to the old hypothisies.

Some people have the conclusion that god created the world and are trying to bend the facts to fit this hypothisis, instead of changing their conclusion.

And there is a lot of money at stake. How much you think the Catholic Church take in a year?

It is not known for sure, but researchers at Tulane have been doing studies on this for about 4 years. They have said it is possibly a genetic problem.

The truth is, evidence in favour of a young earth and an intelligent creator behind it, is far greater than evidence in favor of an old earth and evolution. The theory of evolution has problems in all areas of science and the problems continue increasing, whilst scientific evidence supporting a literal reading of Genesis is also increasing.

Because they're told to. Religion doesn't provide any reasons to believe in it except for faith. Why do people believe in creationism? Their response: "why not?".

It requires a great deal of ignorance to believe in something with no evidence when there's mounds of evidence supporting the opposite. They call it faith. I call it ignorance.

Creationism and Intelligent Design were invented by religious people in order to get around the whole...no religion in schools aspect of our secular government.

People belive in creationism for religious reasons. There is no other excuse. They hold on too tightly to their religious dogma and block out any evidence to the contrary.

And all of biology shows that evolution is correct.
