Because a consecutive interpreter’s notes are so intimately bound up with of taking notes. Some would fold the note-paper vertically in the middle and only use half the page at time. This is for the purpose of what we call the verticality of note-taking. We deliberately do so in order to break up the sentence into morsels for easy digestion. There are then interpreters who write mini-sized notes-like a Chinese craftsman putting a hundred Chinese characters on the face of a grain of rice. At the other extreme are those who use a full page for perhaps just a sentence or two. They might need a whole notebook for a 10-minutes speech. They remind one of those modern painters who splash oils onto their canvas.

At this point, you might well ask: if notetaking is so very much a matter of individual habit quirks or idiosyncratic practice, is there any need to teach notetaking? Why not simply tell the students or would- be interpreters the basic principles and ask them to work out their own system?

For the more talented students this may well be the best method. But most other students would need something more concrete. They need to know the do’s and don’ts of notetaking.

For the more talented students this may well be the best method. But most other students would need something more concrete. They need to know the do's and don'ts of notetaking.

    P.S notetaking
