your friend is right.
most films are endorsed by the Screen Actors Guild - making them SAG films. to become a SAG film, you must use union crew members and in most cases a union director and writer. (DGA- director guild of America and WGA - writers guild of America) this means that those folks must be paid according to the union scale.
independent movies typically are not SAG films. producers and directors get the actors to work for less than the actor's regular wages. sometimes, these can still be ok'ed by SAG if the budget is low and the actors agree to a SAG Experimental Agreement contract.
Films made outside the US are typically not SAG films - esp foriegn films. SAG mostly applies to films made by U.S. (hollywood) production companies.
hope this helps.

Actors get into trouble too for taking drugs. The main reason wrestlers get suspended is because drugs cause people to act differantly. In wrestling they can't have a wrestler who is high or even coming off a high be in the ring in a match. That is WAY too much liabilty. And yes matches are predetermined, but look at the guys that are at the top(Triple H, Batista, Bobby Lashley) and the ones that are mid card and lower(Jeff and Matt Hardy, Charlie Haas, Gregory Helms, Val Venus). Some of the guys may start thinking, "If I bulk up, they will put me in main events" Steriods are a performance enhancing drug. Weight lifters have been known to take them. Body builders have been known to take them. So it doesn't have to be a athletic cometion like Football, Baseball or even Boxing. Steriods "Enhance". Making the person taking them look and feel stronger and more powerful. Plus it's a very quick way to get mussels. I call it the lazy way to get mussels.
