Faith boiled down is in reality nothing but wishful thinking. It is a belief that has no evidential basis, often a belief DESPITE evidence to the contrary. Wishful thinking is really all faith is. It is a hope, a wish a dream, a vapour, a chimaera, an ignis fatuus, a pipe dream, an hallucination born of our hopes and fears and superstitions. However, there is another meaning of Faith. Faith=Trust. This type of Faith can exist from evidence, and the best faith to have is faith in yourself. The Faith (Trust, Confidence) one has in friends and loved ones who have proven themselves in the litmus test of reality, is a good type of Faith. One cannot live without this type. The other types: belief without supporting evidence, belief CONTRARY to fact, should be expunged. One should support an idea solely by its evidential basis, its foundation in fact and reality. The less evidence to support an idea, the weaker its grip should be on ourselves. Where there is little or no supporting evidence, one should assume an agnostic stance, which is nothing but an honest admission: "I don't know". Where matters are controversial, such as the origin of the Universe, where we really have insufficient data, however hard it may be, the best stance to adopt is suspend judgment until the data is in. One then may side with what one deems the most "probable" alternative, but allowing for the possibility of error.
